Ports and People
The topic "Ports and People" covers five workshops and one best Practice dealing with challenges stemming from rising touristic passengers, re-urbanisation of former port areas as well as environmental problems and cultural necessities.

Two main trends are driving the challenges of re-urbanisation and increasing touristic demand. On the one hand ports are facing a fundamental structural change of the activities due to the rising importance of container traffic. Nowadays port areas close to the city center and inappropriate for modern port uses are very often restructured according to new needs of housing and offices. But, this re-urbanisation process requires a lot of compromises between port and city needs, which are discussed in this topic.

On the other hand the cruise market especially in northern Europe is growing tremendously with the need for new infrastructure and appropriate touristic concepts. A study on expected passenger flows completes the activities of this topic.
