Challenges and Future Trends: Ports and Passengers in Europe
Study 04-5
For many ports in the EU, especially for those of the New Member States in East- and Central Europe, Passenger traffic has gained more and more importance in recent years, following the opening of the "iron curtain" in the late eighties / early nineties of last century also in some maritime areas of the EU, especially in the Baltic Sea. At the same time this sector is also "booming" in the "old" EU maritime areas like the Mediterranean and the North Seas, due to various reasons like increased
tourism, improvement of services for maritime passengers etc. The study will submit sound information of present and future developments of passenger flows, possible structural changes (cruise, ferry, yachting, duty free) and the needs of ports to react (e.g. by improving services and offering integrated "cultural concepts" for tourists) in order to tap this promising source of additional income and employment creation.
